The Limpopo Provincial Geographical Names Committee (LPGNC) has in the past three months recommended three geographical names standardization applications for approval. The approvals were by the South African Geographical Names Council and the Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, respectively.

This follows a process of research and consultations with the relevant stakeholders and the public on the applications.

The three recommended applications were considered and endorsed by the South African Geographical Names Council on the 24th of November 2021.
 
On the 10th December 2021, the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture approved and gazetted the following applications for geographical names standardization in terms of Section 10 (2) of the South African Geographical Names Council Act (Act No 118 of 1998):

LIMPOPO GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES CHANGE 

Qaza village name changed from Mabiligwe/Boxahuku village: Collins Chabane Municipality, Vhembe District Municipality.

Josefa village name correction from Joseph village: Collins Chabane Municipality, Vhembe District Municipality. 

Makgobaskloof R71 Mountain Pass name correction from Makgoebaskloof: Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Mopani District Municipality. 

The LPGNC welcomes the decision of the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture to also approve these applications. The LPGNC further calls upon the citizens of our province to contribute towards the transformation of the geographical names landscape by submitting applications for name changes and corrections.
