The Limpopo department of Sport, Arts and Culture held a send-off ceremony for School Sport team at Hayani Lodge, outside Polokwane. The event took place on Wednesday evening, ahead of the National School Sport Championships.

The Championships are scheduled to commence on 04-05 February 2022 in Bloemfontein, Free State Province.

This follows the cancellation of the same event in December 2021. The team departed in the earlier hours of Thursday morning.

Speaking to the media after the send-off ceremony, HOD at the department, Daphne Ramokgopa says the province is hopeful the group will fly the flag high.  

“The overall message is to say to our athletes, they must go and compete. But what we need to see as a Province is to make sure we become the winners, we compete with other eight Provinces so that we become number one,” said Ramokgopa.

Team Limpopo is composed of 90 male and female athletes, 8 Coaches, 8 Managers, 4 Medical personnel.


The National School Sport Championships will take place under the banner of Summer Championships. They will compete in the three sporting codes Football, Tennis and Chess.

The Football will have two segments, the Under 15 selected teams and the under 16 Pan African Championship. It will be used to produce two school teams that will represent the country at the continental event to be held in the Democratic Republic of Congo from 18ST -21ST February 2022.

The second version of the Championship will be hosted in Gauteng Province. It will be in three phases with the remaining codes: swimming, athletics, basketball, table tennis, Softball, Netball. Hockey, Cricket, Gymnastics and Volleyball during the month of March this year.

The National School Sport Championship is a culmination of the school’s league programme. Schools compete schools, inter-school, local level, district level, provincial level and the last lap being the National School Sport Championship.
