“Polokwane Municipality warns all residents to be aware of a lower prepaid electricity scam doing the rounds on social media,” they said in a statement on Wednesday.

“We are aware of fraudulent and discounted prepaid electricity units being offered on social media by scammers. All customers are warned that only units purchased through approved vendors would be accepted by municipal prepaid meters.

“It is also worth noting that electricity tariffs are determined by Nersa. Any units bought outside the municipal supply group code (SGC) will not work on municipal meters. As a result, customers will lose their money. Approved electricity tariffs can be bought from the municipal website.
