The winners for the Limpopo 2021/22 SALGA Municipal awards were revealed during a Gala dinner held at the Ranch Resort outside Polokwane on Wednesday night. SALGA Limpopo is currently led by Polokwane Municipality Mayor, Cllr John Mpe

This event is organised to inspire municipal excellence in good governance and sound financial management. It is also aimed at continually recommitting all municipalities to a programme of action that will bring them in line with the imperatives of the clean audit programme.

It brings together Executive Mayors and Mayors, MMC for Finance, Municipal Managers and Chief Financial Officers from all 27 Limpopo municipalities.

COGHSTA MEC Basikopo Makamu delivered the keynote address.

“So far, a disappointing total of nine of our municipalities have spent below 29% of their MIG. With Thabazimbi Local Municipality being on 0% spending,” he said while addressing the guests.

“Seven have spent between 30% and 56%, and another 9 have spent between 60% and 92% – with Maruleng Local Municipality having spent the highest at 91,2%.

“I want to plead with you colleagues, to set your focus on improving the spending of this budget to safeguard and uplift the dignity of our people. In this country’s historic fight against the evil apartheid regime, our greatest asset
was our people. Let us not be found having betrayed the loyalty they have
entrusted us with.”
