Two boys aged 11 and 12 drowned in the Nzhelele River at Tshituni tsha Fhasi village, in the Vhembe District, Limpopo on Sunday 23 April.

According to the information available at this stage, it is alleged that the two boys Vhonani Chaele (11) and Pfariso Ramudidibi(12) were visiting a relative. They sneaked out at about 16:00 and went swimming in a local river and subsequently drowned in the Makhado area.


According to further information, members of the Community managed to retrieve the body of one of the boys. They thereafter sought assistance from the police whereby the SAPS Search and Rescue Divers managed to retrieve the second body.

Police have opened a case of Inquest. Investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Major General Jan Scheepers has strongly urged parents and guardians to take care of their children.

“Parents and guardians are cautioned to ensure that their children do not take part in swimming activities unsupervised. To be extremely careful to ensure they continuously don’t lose sight of their children. To avoid such heartbreaking incidents,” said Major General Scheepers.
