Well-known Limpopo based Xitsonga musician and Bass-Guitarist Thomas Mathonsi has died, his family announced the sad news on Tuesday.

His passing was announced by his son Nyikiwe Mathonsi DE Junior through different social media platforms. Mathonsi was a great Xitsonga traditional music legend who was also nominated for the Munghana Lonene FM Awards in the category of traditional music in 2022. He has performed and worked with musicians such as Dr Thomas Chauke and Xitsonga music producer Joe Shirimane.


Condolences have already started pouring in for the talented musician. Collins Chabane Local Municipality Mayor Shadrack Maluleke has also described the death of Mathonsi as a great loss to the traditional Xitsonga music.

“His songs reflected a wide range of emotions that struck a chord with people of all age groups and different tribes. We will always remember him through his songs, his Bass-Guitar talent and we like to pass our sincere Condolences to his family and fans,” said Maluleke.

“Mr Mathonsi was a very talented and also a versatile singer. His untimely demise is very saddening and a huge loss to Xitsonga music. With his gifted instrumental skills, he has also left an indelible impression on the minds of countless music lovers. May his soul Rest in Peace,” he said.

“His contribution to the diversification of our nation’s music industry and cultural landscape will never be forgotten.”

The family is yet to announce any details regarding his memorial or funeral services.
