Musician Themba Sekowe, well-known as DJ Maphorisa, has been granted bail of R 4 000 after being arrested for assaulting his girlfriend Thuli Phongolo.

Maphorisa was arrested on Sunday night after Phongolo laid charges of assault at the Sandton police station in Gauteng.

He made his first appearance at the Randburg Magistrates Court on Monday after spending a night in police custody.

State prosecutor Collin Sono also confirmed that Phongolo has also issued a withdrawal statement to drop the assault charges. But the bail conditions will remain effective until charges are officially dropped.

It is alleged Dj Maphorisa who was given bail today grabbed the actress by her neck and dragged her to the balcony of her flat during an altercation on Sunday.

“I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig,” said Phongolo in a statement to the police.

“He held me, took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck.”

The pair have been dating for close to two years.
