The Limpopo Open fencing tournament took place at the University of Limpopo, Capricorn District this past weekend. 

The national competition includes clubs and provinces who participate in fencing and took part in the competition held at Turfloop from 5-7 May.

It was hosted by the Limpopo Fencing Association. The three-day tournament started with the youth championship on Friday and the Limpopo Open on Saturday and Sunday. It comprised the U/17, U/20, seniors as well as veterans teams. The youth Championship consisted of U/11, U13 and U15. 

Olympian and coach at the University of Limpopo Sello Maduma has applauded the growth of the sport in the province. Maduma, who is an Olympian, was spelling to Limpopo Chronicle on the sidelines of the tournament. 

“In the last four years fencing has grown tremendously in this province. We have the University of Limpopo fencing club, we have two high schools that we are working with in terms of partnership with the University,” he said.

Sello Maduma

Maduma represented South Africa at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and London 2012. He is also the founder of the Sello Maduma fencing academy.
