The Sekhukhune District Municipality in Limpopo will soon have a new executive Mayor. This comes after the ANC Limpopo PEC meeting took a decision to instruct the region to ‘properly’ elect a Mayor.
Current Mayor Maleke Mokganyetji has been in office since December 2022 after previous Mayor Julia Mathebe had stepped down.
In their statement following the ordinary PEC meeting, the ANC confirmed that Sekhukhune, as well as the Collins Chabane Municipality, are required to finalise their Mayoral issues.
“The PEC has noted that the Collins Chabane Municipality mayoral issue has been pending for an extended period. That it should be finalised as soon as possible.
ANC INSTRUCT SEKHUKHUNE DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY TO ELECT NEW MAYOR
“The PEC further noted that the appointment of the Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality was not processed in accordance with the ANC procedure.
“Consequently both ANC Vhembe and Sekhukhune region are directed to submit three names within two weeks for Mayoral Candidate to the PEC for further processing,” read the statement.
Amongst other issues discussed by the ANC Limpopo ordinary PEC meeting was the VBS matter.
ON VBS MATTER
The ANC Limpopo extensively discussed the matter of VBS, as per the directive of the National Working Committee.
“The PEC has noted and appreciated the work done by the 9th PEC. As well as the Limpopo Provincial Government relating to the matter,” they said.
“The PEC expressed its gratitude to all municipalities. Which invoked disciplinary measures against the implicated officials who acted outside the law. The PEC also expressed its displeasure about the manner in which some of the implicated officials from various municipalities, who resigned, were given golden handshakes and how some moved from one municipality to another. Despite the cloud hanging over their heads and this was done despite millions lost without recovery.
“The PEC directed all affected municipalities, which suffered the final losses as a result of the VBS investment. To consider recovery of lost monies from all implicated officials, including those who resigned. Further directed all affected or implicated leaders at all levels to voluntarily appear before the Integrity Commission.”
The PEC also touched on Regional General Councils, Regional Makgotlas, Pending New ANC Membership, and Progress relating to Lepelle Nkumpi Municipality. Implementation of Kgalema Report, ANCYL Limpopo, and Incomplete Service Delivery Projects.
