The case against Facebook rapist and murderer Thabo Bester has been postponed to 8 August 2023 to allow for further investigations. This time around Bester will appear in person when the trial resumes. The state prosecutor also revealed that three more arrests are expected.

Bester, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, and seven other suspects appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. The suspects include Magudumana’s father, Zolile Cornelius Sekeleni, former G4S employees Senohe Matsoara, Buti (Motenyane John) Masukela, Tieho Frans Makhotsa and Nastassja Jansen, and Teboho James Lipholo. Sekeleni and Jansen are out on R10 000 bail each.

Zanda Moyo, who is the ninth suspect in the case, will also appear in court on Tuesday. Bester appeared in court via video link from the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Tswane.

Meanwhile, during Tuesday’s court appearance, Bester’s lawyers, Advocate Jeremiah Pela and instructing attorney Tsireledzo Ndou withdrew from the case.

This follows reports last week that Ndou is facing attempted rape and assault charges from the NPA. The 27-year-old is out on R1 000 bail and is expected in court on Wednesday.

THABO BESTER CASE POSTPONED TO AUGUST

Kabelo Matee will now take over from Tshoeunyane Pela as Bester’s attorney. Prosecutor Sello Matlhoko said the state needed about a month to complete its investigation.

“I confirm that a date has been arranged of August 8 for further investigation,” he said.

“There are at least three more suspects to be added. Furthermore, we are still awaiting the analysis of the cellphone records as well as the bank statements of some of the other accused.

“There are two or three more witness statements outstanding. For that purpose, the state is of the view that a month will suffice to allow the completion of this investigation,” he said.

The court also dealt with an application by Dr Magudumana’s father to be excused from appearing in court at the next appearance because he stays about 1,800km away. But that request was denied.
