Limpopo has welcomed a total of 209 Christmas Babies in 2023, 50 of those from teenage mothers. Mopani District has the highest number of Babies with 58 followed by Vhembe with 49.

There was a total of 50 teenage mothers as compared to 37 in 2023, an increase of 17. More Girls were born [106] as compared to the boys [103].


  1. Vhembe District: 24 boys and 25 girls = 49 babies. Notable Mention: Mphambo CHC-01 delivery. 17 Teenage Mothers.
  2. Sekhukhune District: 18 boys and 17 girls = 35 babies. Notable Mention: Praktiseer Clinic – 01 delivery. 10 Teenage Mothers.
  3. Mopani District: 27 boys and 30 girls = 57 babies. Notable Mentions: Multiple clinics with deliveries, including two sets of twins from Nkhensani Hospital. 09 Teenage Mothers.
  4. Waterberg District: 07 boys + 13 girls = 20 babies. Notable Mentions: Thabaleshoba CHC-02 deliveries and Northam Clinic – 01 delivery. 08 Teenage Mothers.
  5. Capricorn District: 30 boys and 18 girls = 48 babies. Notable Mentions: Rachacha Health Centre-4 deliveries, Evelyn Lekganyane Health centre-01 delivery. 06 Teenage Mothers.

Grand Total: Boys = 106, Girls = 103, Total = 209 babies.

Teenage Mothers comparison with the previous year 2022: In 2022, there were 33 teenage mothers, and in 2023, the number rose to 50, indicating an increase of 17.

Comparison in Years: 2022: 217 Babies (118 boys, 99 girls). 2023: 209 Babies (106 boys, 103 girls). In 2023, the overall number of babies is eight less than in 2022.

MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has expressed concern about the increasing number of teenage mothers. She emphasized the need for various sectors to intervene and address this societal issue. Dr. Ramathuba was joined by the Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality, Cllr. Mamedupi Teffo.
