Two boys aged 12 and 13 drowned to death while swimming with friends following a lightning strike at Makgodu village outside Polokwane on Monday. Police in Seshego have since opened two inquest dockets.

It is said that the two boys were swimming together with the other three boys when they suddenly drowned in the river at about 15:30.

It is further alleged that in the process of swimming, there was lightning that struck, and the two boys drowned. They were later identified as Tebogo Mofumadi [12] and Boitumelo Tshabalala [13]. The other three survivors were taken to the nearest hospital for medical treatment

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated, and the cause of the deaths will be determined by the postmortem results.

“We call upon our communities to be extra cautious during the rainy season,” said acting commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers.

 “We are aware of individuals who go into the rivers, and streams for various reasons. Including spiritual or religious or cultural practices. But we urge them to be extra careful during this time as rivers and streams are overflowing.

“We urge parents too to take care of their children to guard against drowning. Parents and guardians are reminded not to leave their children to swim without supervision of the adults.”
