The Polokwane Municipality has become the first municipality in Limpopo to be granted the authority to oversee housing and human settlement initiatives independently. This follows a monumental agreement that was formalized through the signing of the Level 2 Housing Implementation Accreditation Protocol on Thursday. This will see a significant milestone that marks a new era in housing administration for the region.

The accord was signed by the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) in Limpopo Head of Department Dr. Modjadji Malahlela, and the Municipal Manager of Polokwane, Ms. Thuso Nemugumoni. 

The ceremony was also graced by the presence of MEC for COGHSTA Basikopo Makamu and Mayor John Mpe. MEC Makamu emphasized the profound impact of this moment on the province’s residents, particularly those within Polokwane Municipality.

“This day is an occasion of great importance for the residents of our province. More specifically, the Polokwane Municipality,” said MEC Makamu.

“It is a time for joy and celebration, a day that should be etched into memory and preserved in our archives.”

HISTORIC MOMENT AS POLOKWANE MUNICIPALITY SIGNS HOUSING AGREEMENT 

Polokwane Executive Mayor, John Mpe also articulated the municipality’s unwavering commitment to realizing this vision.

“Housing is not merely a basic human need; it is a fundamental human right,” said Mayor Mpe.

“The signing of this protocol signifies our commitment to shouldering the responsibility of providing housing and human settlement ourselves.”

In conclusion, Mayor Mpe reiterated Polokwane Municipality’s acceptance of the responsibilities outlined in the Housing Implementation Protocol. He called for collective resolve and unity in building a brighter future for all residents.
