Limpopo Police have moved swiftly to clarify the circulating hijacking incident in Polokwane CBD on Thursday. In a video all over social media, three armed men can be seen forcing a Man out of a vehicle and taking him to the back seat before driving off. 

The video has raised concerns within the community. But police have since provided clarification regarding the events depicted.

“Upon thorough investigation, it has been confirmed that the person involved in the video was not engaged in a hijacking incident,” said Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.

“Rather, he was apprehended by law enforcement authorities for alleged involvement in drug-related activities.

“The incident occurred on Tuesday, 07 May 2024, when the suspect was intercepted in the CBD. Police confiscated a substantial amount of CAT, cocaine and crystal meth drugs with a combined value of almost R17 000.”

It is reported that a 42-year-old Nigerian male suspect, Anthony Chukwudi Okafor appeared before Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. He is facing a charge of dealing in drugs and was remanded in custody until Wednesday, 15 May.

“Our officers remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of all members of our community,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.

“We urge the public to refrain from spreading wrong vibes and we plead with them to trust the ongoing efforts of law enforcement in upholding justice and maintaining order,” concluded the General.
