Limpopo tennis stars win their Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros

Limpopo-born wheelchair tennis stars Kgothatso ‘KG’ Montjane and Donald Ramphadi made history on Saturday when they became the first South Africans both able-bodied and wheelchair, to win a Roland Garros title since Johan Kriek in 1981.

Tzaneen-born Ramphadi and his doubles partner Andy Lapthorne defeated Heath Davidson and Robert Shaw to claim the Quad Wheelchair Doubles title 1-6, 6-2, 10-3.

Ramphadi who is South Africa’s leading wheelchair tennis quad player won the wheelchair quad singles title at the Belgian Open in 2022. The year he made his Wimbledon debut.

The 30-year-old was also part of South Africa’s quad wheelchair tennis team that won a silver medal at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup last year.

Montjane, who hails from Seshego, on the other hand claimed her Grand Slam champion title longside her partner Yui Kamiji. They triumphed over De Groot and Maria Moreno with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 victory.

“Let’s give a massive round of applause to KG for her incredible achievement, joining Donald Ramphadi on the prestigious Roland Garros podium.

South Africa couldn’t be prouder,” said Tennis SA in a short statement on Twitter.
