The Limpopo Commissioner of Police Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has admitted that the rising Cash-in-transit heists in the province is a worrying factor. There has been reported Cash-in-transit heist in Limpopo, specifically in the Vhembe District.

The latest one was on Wednesday, 7 June when a fidelity security guard was shot and wounded during a cash-in-transit heist at Capitec Venda Plaza in Thulamela Municipality. The suspects managed to make way with an undisclosed amount of cash.

According to the latest crime stats released last week by Police in Limpopo, Thohoyandou is the leading area in terms of Cash-in-transit heists. Tubatse, Makhado, Hlanganani and Bolobedu are the other areas affected. This is for the period between January to March 2023 for the Limpopo Cash-in-transit .

“I can agree that we have a spread of Cash-in-transit that has been taking place in Limpopo. Particularly the worrying factor in the Thohoyandou area,” Hadebe told the media.

“I may not talk about the issues particularly so. But the Hawks and the organised crime and intelligence are working together on some of the people that we are monitoring constantly on our radar.

“So I believe that we will make a breakthrough. Particularly the recent case of Tshakhuma is assisting us to come up with a solution to deal with these issues of the CITs that are taking place in Vhembe,” she explained.

VHEMBE A DANGER ZONE AFTER RISING HEISTS CASES

“Though you might pick up sporadically in the other districts, Vhembe is definitely worrying us. There is a Cash-in-transit plan that we have put in place for Limpopo. We will work around the clock to make sure the elements we are picking up are dealt with accordingly.

“These suspects have been operating between Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng so we are faced with that situation. It has been happening for a while and we are worried, particularly now in May and June. This first week of June has been a nightmare. If we have a CIT after another CIT then it’s a serious challenge that we are having.”
