Human behaviour to blame for road crashes – MEC Radzilani

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani, has expressed serious concern over the spate of road crashes this past weekend.

The Provincial fatalities report indicates that a staggering 25 people perished on the Provincial roads this past weekend, alone. According to the MEC Radzilani, this could be attributed to the fact that the past weekend was a busy period, as it was at the end of the month.

“Losing more than 20 precious lives on the roads in a single weekend is shocking and should be condemned in the strongest terms,” said Radzilani in a statement on Wednesday.

HUMAN FACTORS CONTRIBUTE TO ROAD CRASHES

“Reckless driving and pedestrian involvement have been cited as the major cause of most of these fatalities. There are cases of suspected drunken driving as well.

“‘All these are referred to as human factors, which include driver behaviour and conduct, and could be avoidable,” she said.

“Traffic Officials continue to maintain a constant presence on the roads, however, road safety remains the responsibility of all road users,” concluded MEC Radzilani.

LIMPOPO DR ALSO PERISH IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT

Meanwhile, the Limpopo Department of Health has also expressed sadness at the passing of the Senior Clinical Manager of Mokopane Hospital Dr Danny Mokumo.

Dr Mokumo passed on together with a family member on Monday in a motor vehicle accident on the N1 north next to the Ranch.

He joined the department as an intern doctor stationed at Mokopane Hospital in 2015. He went on to do his community services at Thabamoopo Psychiatric Hospital. Dr Mokumo was appointed a medical officer at W.F Knobel Hospital. Due to his brilliance and diligence, he was appointed in 2018 as the Senior Clinical Manager of Mokopane Regional Hospital. Making him the youngest appointed senior clinical manager in the province at the time.

Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba described Dr Mokumo’s passing as an immense loss to the people of the province.

“Death has once again robbed us of one of our shining stars. Dr Mokumo was not only a capable young doctor, but he was a passionate doctor who loved the people. He lived, dreamt and breathed rural health.

“His passing is just too painful to even contemplate. My heartfelt condolences goes out to his family, colleagues at the entire Limpopo Department of Health. As well as friends, the gift that keeps on giving is no more,” said a devastated MEC Ramathuba.
