Limpopo side Polokwane City have jumped to fourth position in the DStv Premiership following a 3-1 win over Cape Town Spurs at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. It was also the second win for the side since their return to PSL top-flight football.
The goals came from new signings Oswin Appollis [brace] and Douglas Mapfumo in the second half.
POLOKWANE CITY WIN TO MOVE TO THE TOP-HALF POSITION
They are on six points, three below DStv Premiership log leaders and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
The visitors were surprisingly the ones who dominated play in the early stages of the match. They nearly got the lead through last season’s top scorer Ashley Cupido but his shot missed the target by a small margin.
Douglas Mapfumo came close for Rise and Shine but his header from a corner in the 10th minute went wide.
GOAL 15′, 1-0
New signing Oswin Appollis opened the scoring for the home side with a stunning goal outside of the 18-era box.
A few minutes later, Mapfumo combined well with Simon Ramabu. But the shot from outside the box by Mafumo was easily saved by keeper Zama Dlamini.
Cupido wasted a glorious opportunity when his header hit the post just before the halftime break.
HALF-TIME BREAK, 1-0
Asenele Velebayi posed a few threats to the Polokwane City defences cutting from the right-hand side. But all his shots were not strong enough to secure an equaliser.
GOAL 61′, 2-0
Zimbabwean international Douglas Mapfumo scored the second for Polokwane City with a fine header in the 61st minute. It was also his first goal for the club since joining from Black Leopards.
GOAL 78′, 3-0
Appollis scored his second of the match, a third for the home side after he went one-on-one with the Keeper.
But Spurs scored their consolation a minute later through substitute Khaya Mfecane
