Limpopo government investigate corruption allegations at social development

The Limpopo Provincial Government has instituted an investigation into allegations of maladministration against the Head of Department of Social Development Julius Makwena Mahopo. In May this year, the Department of Social Development in Polokwane allegedly awarded a R 61 million security contract to three companies belonging to relatives of senior officials in the department.

The companies were appointed to provide security services from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2026. It is alleged that the companies appointed were as a result of nepotism and corruption.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Limpopo government also said they have taken immediate action to address the allegations.

“The allegations have been made against the Head of Department, Mr. Makwena Julius Mahopo, which are of significant concern. As a result thereof, the provincial government has initiated a thorough investigation into the matters raised,” read the statement.

“The investigation process will be conducted with impartiality and diligence, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. The aim is to gather all necessary information and evidence to ensure a fair and comprehensive assessment of the allegations.
“Upon the conclusion of the investigation, the Limpopo Provincial Government will provide the public with necessary announcements regarding the findings and any subsequent actions to be taken.”
So far no official from the department has been suspended. The investigations are ongoing.
