17-year-old arrested for the murder of his fellow learner in Mahwelereng

Two grade 11 learners were involved in a heated argument which resulted in one of them being murdered in Galakwena Village outside of Mahwelereng on Wednesday. The learners, both 17, argued while at a local Tuckshop in Galakwena, Limpopo on Wednesday, 20 September 2023 at around 20:00.

It is alleged that the suspect pulled out a sharp object, stabbed the victim in the upper body, and fled the scene. The victim was rushed to a local hospital where he unfortunately succumbed to injuries on arrival.
He was identified as Eliya Phago and he was a grade 11 learner at Rakodubana High School in Bokwidi Village. The Police were informed and a manhunt was immediately activated.
SHOCK AS ONE OF MAHWELERENG LEARNERS KILL A FELLOW LEARNER
On Thursday, 21 September 2023, the suspect was handed to the Police by his family and he was then arrested. The probation officer was engaged in the process.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident. She further pointed out that bullying at school or anywhere is absolutely unacceptable. Learners should learn to resolve their disagreements amicably without resorting to violence.
The 17-year-old learner will also make his first court appearance at Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court on 26 September 2023.
