DStv Premiership side Moroka Swallows on Wednesday failed to honour their league fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns due to a dispute with players. The non-payment of salaries at Swallows has been an issue for a while.

Earlier this month, Swallows coach Steve Komphela confirmed that the players did not pitch for training for two weeks. This was due to unpaid salaries. At the time club Chairman David Mogashoa told the media that the issue had been sorted.

But in what came as a shock to football-loving people, the club issued a statement a few hours before their clash against the defending champions. The club explained why they were unable to honour the fixture.

MOROKA SWALLOWS EXPLAIN THEIR FAILURE TO HONOUR LEAGUE FIXTURE

“On behalf of Moroka Swallows FC, an apology is extended to all affected parties due to the cancellation of the following games against Mamelodi Sundowns FC and Golden Arrows FC.

Due to an unresolved dispute between players and management. That has resulted in management having to request cancellation of the two remaining games of this year from the PSL. To allow it time to correct the situation,” the club said.

“Management would like to assure everyone. Within and outside the club that the process of finding one another will soon be found. It has been resolved that no further details will be officially given until an update from the club is issued.”

In a short statement, the Premier Soccer League also confirmed the latest developments.

“The Premier Soccer League has been officially notified today that Moroka Swallows Football Club is unable to fulfill its scheduled DStv Premiership fixtures against Mamelodi Sundowns on 27 December 2023, and Lamontville Golden Arrows on 30 December 2023.

‘The League extends its sincere apologies to all stakeholders, including clubs, sponsors, and spectators, for this unfortunate situation.”
