Limpopo club Baroka FC have reportedly failed to pay their players and staff salaries for the months of November and December 2023. According to a report by the Sowetan, the club has joined many clubs in both the Motsepe Foundation Championship and DStv Premiership that are going through financial difficulties.

The club reportedly sent a text to the staff and players on December 21 informing them that they would only receive 50 percent of their money. They were allegedly promised to be paid the remaining 50 percent before 5 January.
“Management feels that it will be unfair if you go on Christmas without getting any salary. Sorry for the inconvenience,” read one of the messages from the management.

But in an interview with the Sowetan this week, club CEO Richard Mashabane refuted the allegations.
“We’ve paid all the players and everyone working at the club,” Mashabane was quoted by the publication.
“I really don’t know where this comes from. We paid the first 50 percent on December 20 and the other on 30 December. Remember most of our players are Under-23, so we thought we couldn’t give them all the money during the festive season,” he commented.
“We were actually trying to help them because we know what can happen during the festive season. We really don’t have financial problems.”
The club coached by Dan Malesela are currently at position three on the log with 13 matches to go. They trail log leaders Orbit College by just three points and second-placed AmaTuks by one point.
The club was relegated from the DStv Premiership during the 2021/22 season and this is their second season in the lower division. They will return to league action on 14 February after the Afcon break comes to an end.
