SAICA has previously collaborated with the South African Maths Foundation to improve mathematics results. However SAICA is equally concerned about the number of learners who are doing accounting as a subject.
Statistical information at hand indicates that in the country, we only have just 52000 registered chartered accountants. 9500 of them are black. The Class of 2023 that wrote accountancy as a subject in matric in Limpopo is 11387 learners out of the 94000 learners that sat for their matric exam.
SAICA also committed to look into the possibility of carrying the cost of students from TVET college. Who need 18 months of in-service training to get their diploma and the Education Department should provide space at the schools for students who are pursuing careers in finance and accounting space.
MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya welcomed the initiative with open arms. She affirmed that 2024 is a year of academic excellence by immediately instructing the Acting Deputy Director General to action on the proposal from SAICA. A virtual meeting will also be organized soon to track progress.
MEC further indicated that with the SGB Elections, which are to start on the 1st of March to 31st of March 2024, SAICA must consider helping out the new SGB members with financial management training.
