Mathabatha send condolences to the Mmamatlakala bus accident

Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha has sent condolences to the families of the Mmamatlakala bus accident victims. The accident occurred on the Mmamatlakala Bridge, on the R518 road between Marken and Mokopane in the Waterberg District on 28 March 2024.

The accident claimed the lives of 45 individuals, mostly worshippers. Only one person, an 8-year-old girl survived.
CONDOLENCES BY PREMIER STANLEY MATHABATHA FOLLOWING THE MMAMATLAKALA BUS ACCIDENT
“It is with deep sorrow and heavy heart that the Premier of Limpopo Mr Chupu Stanley Mathabatha received the tragic news of the bus accident that occurred on the Mmamatlakala Bridge,” said the Premier’s office in a statement.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims. Both in Botswana and South Africa, as they navigate through this unimaginable loss and grief.
“I extend my deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by this tragedy. May they find strength, comfort, and solace in this difficult time,” said Premier Mathabatha.
The Premier has also urged all drivers to remain vigilant and exercise caution. Especially when navigating challenging road conditions.
“Let us prioritise safety and responsible driving practices to prevent such devastating accidents from occurring in the future. Limpopo’s scenic routes should be pathways of joy and connection, not sites of tragedy and loss,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Premier had dispatched the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Florence Radzilani, to the scene of the accident to conduct a thorough investigation. To also determine the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, has also been dispatched to assist the only surviving passenger whilst the Department of Social Development will provide necessary psycho-social support.
The Premier has also acknowledged the support given by the Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, who was at the accident scene with MEC Radzilani.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation are facilitating necessary interventions with the Botswana government to assist the families of the deceased with the processes of repatriation of the dead.
