Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs killed in hijacking incident

PSL giants Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that their defender Luke Fleurs was killed in a hijacking incident on Wednesday.
A manhunt has since been launched for two suspects who allegedly shot and killed the 24-year-old. The incident is said to have taken place in Honeydew at around 20:30.

Fleurs joined Amakhosi at the beginning of the current season after a stint at SuperSport United. He had not featured officially in any match for the club but played 66 times for United.

“It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg,” the club said on Thursday.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. The SAPS are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course.”
Gauteng police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo has told the media that the provincial police commissioner, Lt-Gen Tommy Mthombeni has appointed a team of seasoned detectives to investigate and search for the suspects. Fleurs was reportedly shot when he had stopped at a petrol station to fill up his car.
“It is reported that the victim [Fleurs] who was driving a red VW Golf 8 GTI drove into the petrol station in 14th Avenue, corner Hendrik Potgieter. While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males who came driving a white BMW 1 Series,” said the Police.
The suspects pointed at him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle. They then shot him once on the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car, followed by his accomplice,” said Masondo.
He was taken to the nearest medical care centre, where he was certified dead on arrival.
