Dr Phophi Ramathuba’s first words as Limpopo Premier

Newly elected Premier of Limpopo Dr Phophi Ramathuba has delivered her first speech following her inauguration on Friday. Dr Ramathuba becomes the first female Premier of the province since 1994.
The inauguration of the 7th Administration of the Limpopo Legislature took place in the Lebowakgomo Legislative Chamber.

Newly sworn in Members took the Oath and Solemn Affirmations before the Presiding Judge, George Phatudi, who is the Limpopo High Court Judge President. Makoma Grace Makhurupetje from the ANC was elected Speaker unopposed. ANC Women’s League Provincial Secretary Tebogo Mamorobela was elected deputy speaker, also unopposed. It is also the first time that all three elected into the positions are women.

“I am more than humbled by your faith and the confidence you have shown in me as the first democratically elected female Premier of this great province,” said Dr Ramathuba.
“Allow me to pay my gratitude to the esteemed leaders and members of this great movement, the ANC and the Alliance partners who are here today to witness this historic occasion.
“I also want to thank my family especially my only surviving parent, my mother, my late father, friends, and comrades for offering me words of encouragement, Idare not fail,” she said.
“I do not take this responsibility for granted. Your confidence in me has placed on my shoulders and those of other deployees a necessary burden to work diligently and tirelessly. To change the lives of our people for the better. I know it as a matter of fact, that my election today is not a personal feat, but a call to action.
“I shall always strive to exercise my responsibilities with one thing in mind. That the people of Limpopo and their needs must always come first. The word responsibility carries a dual, but complementary, meaning.”
