Mpheni Defenders from Limpopo are the first team to be eliminated from the SAFA ABC Motsepe League national playoffs in Upington. This comes after their 3-1 defeat by Western Cape champions Rangers on Wednesday.

They finished with one point from the two matches, meaning they now don’t have any mathematical chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. This is the second attempt by Mpheni, who also failed in the semi-finals last year.

On Tuesday, Mpheni surrendered a 2-0 lead to Njampela from KwaZulu-Natal with five minutes to go and ended up playing to a 2-draw. Defenders are now the first team to head home.

“It was a tough one. What I can say is congratulations to Rangers. They played well and executed their game plan well. They played with high intensity, forcing us to make those silly mistakes. We made those errors very early in the game.

“It’s a tournament. Whether you lose 1-0 or 10-0, you are going out, it’s like that. Our players have learned a lot from these games. In future, they will also try to improve”
