Proteas into the T20 World Cup final after historic win

The Proteas made history by booking their first-ever spot in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup on Thursday. Captain Aiden Markram and his team registered an emphatic nine-wicket win over Afghanistan in their semi-final clash at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.

Batters Reeza Hendricks and Markram saw them home on a difficult surface with a 55-run second-wicket partnership. leading their team to 60 for one in 8.5 overs, sauntering home with 11.1 overs to spare after bowling out their surprise semi-final opponents for just 56.

“There are a lot of people waking up with a little bit more grey hair. But this win will be more comforting for them,” he said.
“We’ve never been there before, but there’s a lot of belief. It takes a full squad to put together a really good game of cricket,” said Markram after the match.
Marco Jansen spearheaded the Proteas’ frontline attack, taking 3/16. Spinner Tabraiz Shamsi helped clean up the tail, returning 3/6. South Africa had no trouble chasing down their target as they raced to 60/1 in the ninth over, securing victory with 67 balls to spare.
It’s also the first time a team has bowled out their opposition for under 100 in a Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final.
The Proteas will now face either India or England in the T20 World Cup final, to be played in Barbados on Saturday. India and England will compete in the other semi-final in Guyana on Thursday at 16:30.
