Three elders accused of SASSA fraud appear in court

Two elderly women from Kgapane, Limpopo and a male SASSA employee appeared in court on Wednesday for disability grant fraud.
Three accused, Mphekgwana Elisa Modjadji [59], Lefupane Mahloatlie Mamatome [58] and Malekutu Walter Ramoshaba [48] made their appearance in the Kgapane Magistrates court. They are charged with fraud following their arrest on Tuesday, 02 July.

It is said between May and August 2021, the two Women went to Bolobedu SASSA at the Kgapane office in Mopani to apply for disability grants.
The two were given the application forms by one of the SASSA officials so that the forms could be completed by the doctors appointed by the government. The forms were then completed. But not approved as the two ladies did not qualify for disability grants. The forms were then resubmitted with amendments enabling the pair to be approved.

The matter was then reported to the police after the capturing clerk suspected foul play. The Serious Corruption Investigation unit was tasked to investigate.
During the investigation, the office of question documents was consulted. It was discovered that the handwriting that made the amendments belonged to one of SASSA’s employees.
The case was postponed to Thursday, 4 July 2024 for a formal bail application.
