Another initiate dies in Limpopo

A 16-year-old initiate at Bungeni Initiation School in Limpopo died on Sunday morning after complaining about ill health. The initiate has been identified as Fhundzo Khomolo from Bungeni Village [Manyunyu section].
Khomolo was admitted to Bungeni Initiation School on the 20th of June 2024. On Sunday morning, he complained that he was not feeling well. He was taken to a Medical Doctor for a check-up, where he was given some medication and declared to be in good condition.

“Later on in the day, he again complained of the same illness. The Traditional Surgeon drove with him back to the same Doctor who re-examined him and certified him dead,” explained Hosi Given Bungeni.
Hosi Bungeni says he has made agreements with the family that he will work closely with them in preparing for the funeral of their loved one.
The death of Khomolo comes after another initiate died at Ga-Welly village after being forcibly removed from the Modjadji initiation school by his parents. He tragically died while in the care of his parents at home.

The MEC for CoGHSTA, Basikopo Makamu has expressed his sadness at the passing of Khomolo.
“The death of one child is just too many. We did not expect a death as our Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee – PICC. As led by Hosi Shitlhangoma Chauke had worked hard for a zero death tolerance at our Initiation schools. As a Department, we pass our deepest condolences to the bereaved Khomolo family,” said MEC Basikopo Makamu.
Meanwhile, MEC Makamu attended the closing ceremony of the Ngove Initiation School at Ka-Ngove on Saturday. He commended Hosi Ngove, who is also the Chairperson of the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders, for successfully delivering a fatality-free initiation season.
MEC Makamu also extended his gratitude to all stakeholders involved under the Limpopo Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee.
“Their collective efforts have consistently ensured accident-free initiation seasons year after year. Highlighting their commitment to the safety and also the well-being of all participants.”
