Premier of Limpopo Dr Phophi Ramathuba led a homecoming celebration in honour of BET award winner Makhadzi which included a street parade in Polokwane.

Makhadzi recently won the Viewers’ Choice: Best New International Act at the 2024 BET Awards held in the USA. The celebrations began with a welcome breakfast hosted at the Meropa Casino.

The Polokwane Municipality also closed some streets for the parade in the city which started around 11:30.

“I don’t know where to start. But as a province what we can tell you is that we have been crossing our fingers [that she brings back the award],” said Premier Dr Ramathuba.

“Praying, sending her messages of love and telling her that we believe in her. Indeed whoever thought in the 30 years of democracy Limpopo can have a BET award. So she has put our province on the map. We are very proud. The fact that she is proud of her humble beginnings. She never hides where she is coming from. She never hides.

“She sings in all three vernacular languages in our province and even in Khelobedu. Because of Makhadzi, people now know we do have the Vhavenda people, Bolobedu or Tsonga people. So we need to pride ourselves as a province for this work that she has done,” added Dr Ramathuba.

Makhadzi couldn’t hide her excitement after her own province hosted a welcome party for her. “I am feeling so excited. I am happy about it and I am nervous at the same time,” she said.

“But for me to come here shows that I am the queen that I think I am. I feel like everything happens for a reason. Today for me to be here, is to make someone sitting at home believe that it is possible to come from the dusty street at Ha-Mashamba and go to LA to receive the Best International Act award.”
