Seshego’s Kgothatso Montjane Wins Wimbledon title

Kgothatso Montjane from Seshego, Limpopo and Yui Kamiji of Japan won the wheelchair women’s doubles final at Wimbledon on Sunday. They beat the Dutch pair of Diede de Groot and Jiske Griffioen 6-4 6-4.

The pair were silver finalists in the 2023 competition. It is Montjane’s third overall doubles Grand Slam title and her first Wimbledon title.

“We are just happy that this year we managed to fight for it,” said the Seshego-born star. “It’s been a tough week playing each other and having to put our heads together to play doubles. It hasn’t been an easy one.

“But, we are happy to playing here and for the crowd for staying, because when you watch, the sport grows,” she said.

Montjane is currently ranked Number one in South Africa in the women’s disabled division. She has earned numerous accolades both locally and internationally, solidifying her status as an inspiring sports icon.
