Limpopo Man arrested for rape of a 101-year elderly woman

A 27-year-old Man has been arrested for the rape of a 101-year-old Woman who is also his neighbour in Zaaiplaas village, Limpopo. The incident is alleged to have taken place on Saturday, 27 July at 05:00 in the Sekhukhune District.

The suspect has already appeared before Zaaiplaas Periodical Court on charges of housebreaking and rape. He was remanded in custody until 08 August 2024 for possible bail application.

Reports indicate that the 101-year-old victim was asleep when she was awakened by the suspect. He tried to strangle her before he raped her. The suspect,  who broke the window to gain entry, fled the scene after the incident.

Police were notified, and a manhunt ensued. The suspect was identified and arrested at his home shortly after the incident.

“This despicable act of violence against a vulnerable member of our community is met with the full force of our commitment to justice,” said Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe 

“The rape of an elderly woman is not just a crime against an individual but a deeply disturbing assault on our society’s values and sense of safety.”

Meanwhile, the MEC for Social Development, Ms Florence Radzilani has condemned brutally raped.

 “As we observe August as Women’s Month, a time dedicated to honouring and uplifting women’s voices and experiences, this horrific crime stands in stark contrast to the values we hold dear,” she said.

“We should be celebrating the strength and resilience of women. Yet we find ourselves mourning the violation of an innocent elderly woman, illustrating a critical need for immediate action.”

“It is our collective responsibility to ensure their safety and dignity,” said Radzilani. The MEC urges all citizens to come together to protect our elders and to support initiatives aimed at enhancing their safety and well-being.
