Condolences pour in for the late Prof Muxe Nkondo

People from all walks of life have begun to send their condolences following the passing of academic, public-policy practitioner, cultural leader and University of Limpopo’s first SRC President, Prof Muxe Nkondo. The 83-year-old passed away on Sunday, 18 August 2024.
Prof Nkondo was a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Venda, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of the North and Harvard Andrew Mellon Fellow in English.

“The Nkondo Family is sad to announce the death of Prof Muxe Nkondo, an academic, public-policy practitioner and cultural leader, who made a profound difference in many areas of South African life. The family is committed to continuing his legacy. Further details will be announced in due course,” the family said in a statement on Sunday.
He is survived by his wife, Prof Olga Nkondo; his children, Ntsako, Muxe, Mikateko, Zava, Mbonya and Nkenyezi; grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has also sent condolences to the Prof Nkondo family. “Prof Nkondo has left us at the end of a life distinguished by his relentless pursuit – and generation – of knowledge that has made his country, continent and the world a richer, more inclusive place,” the president said in a statement.
“His ideas and their application have impacted on lives and institutions across the globe. They also have a diaspora of academics, leaders and administrators who have benefited from Prof Nkondo’s inexhaustible intellect and interest in the betterment of humanity.”
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has also extended her deepest condolences. “We are deeply grateful for the knowledge and guidance that Prof Nkondo provided to students, workers, and all he interacted with,” she said.
“Prof Nkondo was the first ever SRC president of the University of Limpopo. His leadership has shaped the minds and characters of many, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. The people of Limpopo are proud to have produced a gallant fighter of his calibre.”
