Kaizer Chiefs duo of captain Itumeleng Khune, as well as striker, Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana, have been ruled out of this year’s Carling Black Label Cup.
The PSL club announced the lasts developments on Wednesday. The one-day tournament is scheduled to take place on 12 November 2022 at FNB Stadium.
The two players have been withdrawn from the voting list following advice from the Kaizer Chiefs medical team. Khune is being treated for a knee tendon injury, and Caleb for a groin strain.
Him and Bimenyimana also missed last Saturday’s Soweto Derby.
Khune led the Carling Black Label Cup voting list across all participating teams. He had a substantial margin, with almost 170 000 votes. He is followed by Keagan Dolly on 65 000 votes.
Supporters who selected the duo to start the match will be “refunded” their votes by the organisers. They will be allowed to re-cast their votes for players available for team selection.
KAIZER CHIEFS FACE PIRATES WITHOUT DUO
Chiefs will face Orlando Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup at midday on Saturday, 12 November. The first game, at 9:30am, will see AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns kick off the competition. The third-place play-off starts at 3:30pm with the final commencing at 5pm.
LORCH RULED OUT
Meanwhile, Pirates may be forced to play without Thembinkosi Lorch who could withdraw from the squad as he’s busy with his rehabilitation.
Lorch was a notable absentee in Tuesday’s training session at Rand Stadium, and he will certainly not take part in Saturday’s MTN8 Cup final against AmaZulu.
Lorch suffered a fresh injury blow just over a week ago as his knee was building up fluid and started swelling, and chances are that he will only return at the start of 2023.
He last featured for Pirates in the 0-0 draw away to SuperSport United on 21 August, and he has missed a whopping 11 games, including the Soweto derby against Chiefs this past weekend.
The 29-year-old is also one of the frontrunners with over 30 000 votes. It’s unclear who will take his place if he were to withdraw.
