Ntate Piet Makwa (80) has become a very important figure in the community of the small town of Roossenekal in the Sekhukhune District due to his reliable Donkey cart transport business.
Makwa started his Donkey cart transport in 2021 after realising the need to intervene due to the lack of transport within the community.
He sold one of his cows to purchase the donkey cart in Mbombela Mpumalanga. The cart is nicknamed Machanakana Koloiya Magotsi.
DONKEY CART PRIZES
For a ride, one pays between R 10 and R 20 depending on the distance. Sometimes people from the local church hire it for their use.
Piet Makwa told Chronicle News how it all began for the Popular taxi.
“I started this business last year,” he said.
“It depends on how many people I get in a day to determine the amounts make. Some days they don’t utilize my transport so it can be bad.
“It’s R 20 to and from (a destination) because this is a small area. The business was slow last year but as you can see it’s growing bigger and bigger. So things are better,” he said.
“I use the money you buy groceries and also to pay societies. I found this donkey cart in Nelspruit (Mbombela) and bought it in exchange for my cow.”
“It transport all kinds of people. With young ones, it’s six at a time but with elders, it’s five at a time.
“I have now decorated it because it’s Christmas season so I want people to see, take pictures and show their kids at home.”
