Sebasa Mogale, a former Thobela FM presenter and his wife Dorah Mogale briefly appeared in court on Friday after being arrested for Bitcoin scam fraud. The two are facing cases of fraud emanating from the Bitcoin Scam.

They were each released on a bail of R10 000 and will appear again at  Polokwane Magistrate’s court on 20 May 2024 for further Police investigation.

Reports indicated that in 2020, Mogale, who was working at Thobela advertised a scam called “Mining City” on Radio. He explained how people become rich by investing money into the Mining City packages, which the investors will get rewarded based on how much they invested.

“In that radio advert, he told listeners to visit his office, number 103 present, Landros Mare Street, Polokwane to attend the session where he and two other people will be presenting in the seminar,” Police said in a statement.

Former Thobela FM presenter Sebasa Mogale arrested for Bitcoin scam fraud

“People attended the session, and the brochures were distributed to them, which indicated the different packages.

“The attendees believed in the advertised scam, the reason being he was Sebasa Mogale, the Radio Presenter,” they further explained.

“They gave them reference numbers to individually deposit the money into the Standard bank account belonging to the Altcoin trader. The alleged mining packages varied from R6500 to R253 000.00 with estimated payouts.”

“Indeed the victims put money in the said Scam. Money was deposited and given instruction that after they deposited the money they should go back to the office where they created email addresses and logging details for each victim, to have access to their money invested.

“They told them to wait for a period of six months before they withdrew their benefits so that they could get better benefits.”

Apparently, the problem started when the victims tried to withdraw their money. That’s when they realized that the details given to them were blocked.

When victims questioned Sebasa Mogale telephonically about their investment. He told them that the Mining City Scam had collapsed due to the inflation rate.

“It meant that said investors had lost their money in the scam. The victims went back to the office. But unfortunately, they found that the office was closed and his phone was on voice mail.

“Around the year 2022 in May, over ten case dockets were registered against the suspects at Polokwane and Mokopane SAPS. More cases are expected to be opened.”

“One of the greatest to ever grace the radio fraternity. It was during my high school days when I heard the energetic, husky voice of this legend on Mohodi FM. Not only was he a presenter but Matome was also a musician as well. His hit Go Nkga Teki was one of the most popular songs he has ever released,” wrote former colleague and now Energy FM presenter Kwenisto Makgaga.

“Dear brother in Broadcasting, it is with deep sadness to be writing a tribute to you posthumously. I cannot believe my ears. I had to convince myself that perhaps it was fake news. Especially after receiving a message from our fellow college student, Connie, who was also in shock and disbelief. I cried. Yes, I hysterically cried…I was like “No ways! Not Matome.” My day turned dark,” wrote Lerato Maseogane.

“Sending love and comfort to his family, friends and colleagues from all of us at Mukurukuru Media. May the ancestors receive his gentle soul and offer him eternal peace among the angels,” said renowned journalist and founder of Mukurukuru Media Lucas Ledwaba.

Politician and SA member of parliament Boy Mamabolo was also among those who have paid tribute to Maupi.
